When the Room Doesn’t Fit the AV Gear
Sometimes you have a room that isn't laid out the way you prefer when you purchase your home or condo, or sometimes you have a change of perspective and want to alter the layout. Sometimes it can be accomplished easily, sometimes it's a more lengthy process. That was exactly the case with one of our recent clients—and in this article, we’ll walk you through how we transformed their space with a smarter, cleaner
AV setup.
The Challenge: Cluttered Tech in a Bright, Open Room
We recently met a client who purchased a condo with a
projector, motorized movie screen, 5 speakers and a subwoofer, and a ton of messy wires right next to his sofa. When you entered the home, the first thing you noticed was the projector staring you in the face and a rack of black equipment where a sofa table should have been. This was all in a "light and bright" style room, where this gear became visually offensive.

The Goal: Clean, Subtle, and Seamless AV
Upon meeting with the client, he informed us that he wanted to clean up the room and make the A/V system more subtle while still having his complete system. We suggested retaining his existing speakers and receiver, removing the projector and screen, replacing the screen with an 85" TV and moving all of his equipment into furniture under the TV.
The Plan: Creative Wiring Without an Attic
This is a very standard system for us (and most people who do this), but this was in a condo with no attic to run wires. We came up with a plan to reverse the equipment location by reversing and backfeeding some of the speakers on existing wires while pulling some can lights to run 2 new wires that were needed. The client agreed, and we went to work!
The Install: Two Days of Transformation
We spent the first day removing the projector, motorized screen (and the laser light projector in the ceiling), running new wires, and working with the electrician to add new outlets where needed. The second day,
we installed & mounted the new 85" Samsung LED TV, reconnected his equipment, and reconfigured everything. We also swapped out 2 TV's in other rooms with larger units and added a new soundbar to his game room TV.

The Result: Cleaner Look, Better Sound
When all was completed, the client complimented us on the cleanliness of what was a difficult and time-consuming installation. He also said, "you used my same sound equipment, but it never sounded this good! What did you do with it?"
The Secret: Sound Tuning That Most Installers Skip
I told him many companies just do the basic setup and configuration, use the supplied setup microphone to calibrate the speakers and go no farther. We use the factory calibration as a starting point, and we then listen to multiple genres of our own music to verify it sounds the best it can with familiar sound sources. We then demo it for the client and make more adjustments (if needed) to make it suit their tastes and environment.

Don’t Miss the Most Important Step
This goes far in getting the most out of your hard-earned money. The equipment is expensive; you deserve to get the most out of your purchase. The first step of your project is installation, the next is the setup, and the missed piece of the puzzle is the fine-tuning of your system. This gets the most out of your gear. Don't miss this integral piece!
What Equipment Was Involved?
Here’s a breakdown of the core components in this AV makeover.
Previously Installed AV Equipment:
- Ceiling-mounted laser projector
- Motorized drop-down screen
- 5.1 speaker system
- AV receiver
- Equipment rack
Upgraded or Replaced:
- Samsung 85" LED TV
- Media console furniture to conceal equipment
- New wiring for the speaker and power connections
- Two larger TVs in other rooms
- Soundbar in the game room
Retained & Reused:
- Original 5.1 speakers and subwoofer
- Original AV receiver
- HDMI sources and peripherals
The Takeaway: Don't Skip the Final Step
AV Installation is just step one. Configuration is step two. But fine-tuning? That’s the step most companies skip. And it’s the difference between hearing your equipment and experiencing it.
Your gear is expensive. You deserve the full performance it’s capable of.
