From a Tricky Room Layout to a Multi-Purpose Media Room

We turned a challenging room layout into a stunning multi-purpose media room with 4K visuals, balanced sound, and seamless control.

A New Vision for a Multi-Purpose Media Room

We recently met a family who wanted to step up their home theater experience. They had a Media Room, which was multi-purpose, but was not laid out in the best fashion for any of their uses. The projector and screen were on the "long walls" of the room, which positioned them close together. They wanted to relocate everything and improve upon its usefulness and overall quality.

Reuse, Relocate, and Rewire

We reused their existing movie screen, installed a new projector and ceiling mount, and worked with local electricians to provide power to the new locations. Re-running speaker wires for the surround and surround back speakers was part of the equation, as the balance of the speakers and electronics would be in the front cabinet under the movie screen. We provided the proper dimensions so the cabinetry could be custom fabricated to fall within the available space.

Delays and Design Adjustments

As happens, our local weather (hurricanes in Tampa Bay) impeded the progress, everything was put on hold, and we held on to their equipment until they were ready to proceed. The cabinetry for the front speakers, subwoofers and electronics was eventually completed (following the many delays which were now occurring in the area post-hurricane) and they were ready for completion.

Despite the setbacks, we kept everything moving forward with clear communication and flexibility. The client appreciated the experience and shared this five-star feedback:

"Total pros. Not only designed our movie room with ease but held onto our equipment for an extended period of time to accommodate delays in having our built-ins completed. All around great experience."

Hearing this kind of feedback is exactly why we do what we do. Even in the face of unexpected delays, we’re committed to delivering both quality and support throughout the entire process.

Final Installation and Equipment Setup

We returned when most of the construction and renovation was completed to reinstall the equipment in its new furniture. Along with the previously installed Sony VPL5000ES 4K Laser projector, Chief ceiling mount system with downrod and a small footprint surge suppressor for the projector, we ran a 35' HDMI over Fiber Optic cable to get the image from the receiver to the projector.

The in-ceiling speakers are (4) Monitor Audio CC180 8" round models which were positioned properly to take advantage of the ceiling angles and the best seating location, providing proper imaging from the surround and surround back channel locations.

A Theater Which Works With the Room

In the front of the room, their existing fixed (non-motorized) screen was placed on their newly renovated wall, and with their new cabinets in place, we installed the electronics. We provided a SurgeX surge suppressor, dual SpeakerCraft HRSi10 1000-watt subwoofers, (2) Monitor Audio left and right front bookshelf speakers from their "Silver" lineup paired with a Monitor Audio "Silver" center channel speaker. A Yamaha RX-A6 surround sound receiver was connected to all of the aforementioned electronics to handle all of the switching, amplification, and processing duties.

Seamless Streaming and Control

Their primary source of media was all of the currently available streaming sources, so we installed a Roku Ultra to provide the content. This specific model Roku streaming media center features a faster processor along with the capability of IR control, which many Roku models do not have. A URC MX990 color PC programmed remote was configured to correctly control all of their equipment easily, and we installed a URC MRF 350 Radio-Frequency control module to allow operation of everything seamlessly behind the closed cabinet doors.

A Room-Filling Experience

The project was completed on their timeline, the amazingly bright Sony Laser projector cast a vivid image even with ambient lighting, and the entire sound experience filled the room with the full spectrum of sound with rich, full bass and crystal clear highs.
