How this works
We combine a comfort field of view target with an acuity limit of 60 pixels per degree. Recommended distance is the larger of the HFOV distance and the acuity distance.

TV Viewing Distance and Resolution: A Quick Guide
Gone are the days of the monstrously heavy CRT TV along with its big brother, the Rear-Projection TV and their sub-par, grainy images. We calculated the resolution with “scan lines” instead of individual dots/pixels, and watching TV and sports (“where did the puck go” or “what does that say?) felt limited. The “resolution” in that era was usually around 240–480 lines of resolution.
Today, current TVs and panels generally begin around 720 pixels (generally reserved for smaller screens, since your eyes have limits as to how close you need to be to discern any higher resolution on a small screen). All displays of a specified resolution have the same number of horizontal and vertical pixels (dots), but on a 70" TV, the dots are twice as large as the same number of pixels on a 35" model. Smaller TVs will always look more clear, unless you press your nose to the screen, because of this fact: smaller dots making up the picture.

How Close Should You Sit?
There has long been discussion regarding how close you “should” sit from the TV or projection screen in relation to the screen size, and the info out there varies. We will delve into the reasoning along with some of the math behind this. Don’t worry if “mathing it out” isn’t your thing, since we (thank you Justin from Web Education Services), who created the screen size calculator, came up with a calculator to assist in setting some guidelines.
First, we will provide some of the info on the decisions required, since these may likely come into play regarding your decision. The goal is to balance image clarity with an immersive viewing angle that feels natural for movies, sports, and everyday TV.
The Eyes Have It
Your eyes are one of the primary factors in determining your screen size vs. viewing distance. The other factors, like how large your wall or space is and what your budget looks like, are also paramount, but that is for you to work on. We are addressing other topics in this post.
Gotta start somewhere, so we are starting with this: the closer you sit to your display (TV screen or projector screen), the more immersive your experience will be. This is not the only or most important aspect, merely the one we are choosing to work out first. There are several key takeaways, which we are covering next.
Individual Pixel Acuity
Regarding the viewing distance from your eyes to the display, if you are too close, you can actually “see” the dots that make up your picture. The closer you sit, the easier it is to make out the dots. If you increase your resolution (more, smaller dots making up the same picture size), you can sit closer to the image without being able to see the dots. You can also move farther away, but this results in less of the “immersivity factor.”
In other words, resolution buys you flexibility. Higher resolution reduces visible pixel structure, which lets you choose a closer, more cinematic seat without sacrificing perceived sharpness.
Pupil and Head Movement
Ever go to the theater for an action flick, get there late, and be forced to sit in the front row? Happened to me. At first it was amazing, and soon it was fatiguing. It was actually work to keep moving my head and eyes to keep up with all the action scenes. This also comes into play with sports, where the movement strays from the center of the screen frequently. Don’t do it.
Comfort matters. An immersive setup should pull you in, not wear you out.
Full Visual Perception
Expanding on that, we as humans have an approximate 200 degree range of vision where we can see, but our total focal capability (where we can actively focus completely) is around 55–60 degrees. The resultant side perception isn’t necessary to take in the side visuals, scenery, or the less necessary parts of the image, but it (again in sports and action movies) can be important in most scenarios.
Aim for a viewing angle that fills your focus without forcing constant head turns. That sweet spot is where immersion and comfort meet.
Motion Sickness Considerations
This is usually only applicable in an IMAX setting or something similar, but there are those who are more susceptible to these effects, something to consider in your journey of optimum viewing pleasure. The more of your world that moves around you the more likely this may be a concern.
If anyone in the household is sensitive to motion, choose a slightly smaller angle or sit a bit farther back to keep things comfortable.
Scale, Space, and Resolution Together
Summarizing, you need to consider your available space and base your decision on scale. A huge TV over a dinky fireplace, or a dinky TV on a 22' wall, will appear out of scale. Also, your resolution (generally only 4K or 8K these days, not much content for 8K, but a better TV will use its processing power to attempt to “create” a better image with its smaller dots). Smaller dots (higher resolution) make the same picture appear more clear.
Once you know your room size and aesthetic, lock in the viewing angle you prefer, then match screen size and resolution to hit that angle from your typical seating position.
