What is the best way to smash a subwoofer? Watch our video and find out!

Defective AV Equipment Under Warranty

As an audio-video company dealing in top-tier consumer electronics, we rarely have equipment failures. But, when we do, our suppliers stand by their equipment and their warranties. While some defective products can be repaired or returned to the manufacturer, there are times when neither option is cost-effective.

In such cases, manufacturers often require the product to be "field destroyed" to prevent repurposing or resale. This means the product must be completely destroyed and disposed of properly. Normally, this is a simple process. But today, we decided to have some fun with it.

First Attempt: Death by Jeep

Our first attempt destroying the subwoofer involved a Jeep and a plank ramp. The plan was simple: drive over the subwoofer and crush it without damaging the vehicle. However, the outcome was surprisingly uneventful. Despite our efforts, including rocking the Jeep back and forth and placing the subwoofer on a corner to increase stress, the subwoofer remained intact. High-quality, modern subs are pretty impressive

Next Up: Death by Chainsaw

Anticipation was high for our next attempt: using a chainsaw. The strategy involved cutting a perimeter around the subwoofer to weaken its enclosure, followed by an attempt to crush it with the Jeep. Again, the result was no different from our initial attempt.

The Reliable Sledgehammer

Then came the tried-and-true method: a sledgehammer. This approach did not disappoint. The subwoofer was effectively destroyed, with parts scattering everywhere. It was a clear reminder of why the sledgehammer is a dependable tool for such tasks.

The Drop Test

With another subwoofer lined up for destruction, we decided on a simpler method: the drop test. A standard drop wasn't effective, so we elevated the game. The subwoofer was thrown about 9 feet into the air, leading to minimal damage. However, with repetition, the subwoofer finally started coming apart, achieving our objective. This exercise was an eye-opener to the impressive internal bracing of these modern subs, highlighting their solid construction.

Safety and Enjoyment in Destruction

While we find field-destroying products intriguing and somewhat enjoyable, safety remains our top priority. If you decide to undertake such a project, ensure you maintain a safe distance for all involved and use appropriate safety equipment. Safety is crucial for you, any onlookers, and assistants.
