A Different Kind of Speaker, From Lawrence, Kansas

Entertainment Pros is a MartinLogan Masterpiece dealer in Clearwater, serving Pinellas County and the rest of Tampa Bay. Masterpiece is the tier that carries the full line, including MartinLogan's flagship electrostatics, rather than only the in wall and subwoofer models. MartinLogan has been building electrostatic speakers in Lawrence, Kansas since the early 1980s, and we chose the line for one reason: an electrostatic speaker does something a box speaker cannot.

Instead of pushing air with a cone, an electrostatic panel moves an ultra thin film across its whole surface at once. There is almost nothing to start and stop, so the sound is fast, open and unusually clear. People who thought they were finished upgrading tend to sit back down when they hear it.

They are also unusually sensitive to the room, which is the other reason we carry them. A MartinLogan set up carelessly is a waste of a great speaker. Set up by somebody who measures the room first, it is the best sound in the house.

How an Electrostatic Speaker Makes Sound

Three layers, high voltage, and a film you can barely see. Here is what is happening inside the panel.

Inside an electrostatic panel A thin charged diaphragm hangs between two perforated metal stators. The amplifier signal, stepped up by a transformer, charges the stators with opposite polarity, which pushes and pulls the diaphragm as a whole. Sound radiates equally from the front and the back of the panel. Amplifier music signal Step up transformer +++ front statorback stator charged diaphragm, about 12 microns thick Sound to the front and an equal wave from the back, which is why the wall behind matters
Simplified. The diaphragm is roughly an eighth the thickness of a human hair.
12 microns

A film thinner than a hair

The diaphragm is a conductive plastic film stretched between two perforated steel stators. A human hair is roughly eight times thicker.

Push and pull

The whole surface moves

The diaphragm holds a fixed charge. The music signal, stepped up to high voltage, charges the two stators with opposite polarity, so the film is pushed from one side and pulled from the other at the same time.

Front and back

A true dipole

Sound leaves the front and the back of the panel equally. The two waves cancel at the sides, which cuts down reflections off the side walls, and the wave off the wall behind adds depth.

Why Placement Decides How They Sound

Because an electrostatic panel sends sound backward as well as forward, the space behind the speakers is part of the speaker. Too close to the wall and the depth collapses. Pulled out the right distance and toed in toward your seat, the panels seem to vanish and the music fills the space between and behind them.

That is why we will not quote you a model over the phone. We look at the room, where the seat can go and what is behind the speakers first. Then we set them up, measure, listen with you in the chair, and move them until it is right. With these speakers, a few inches really does change what you hear.

The panels are also see through, so a pair of MartinLogans takes up far less visual space than its size suggests. In a Florida living room full of light, that matters more than people expect.

What MartinLogan Makes

The short version. Which line fits depends on your room, and that is a conversation we have after we have seen it.

Electrostatic hybrids

The heart of the brand, up to and including the Masterpiece Series flagships. An electrostatic panel handles the voice and the detail, and a conventional woofer handles the deep bass below it. This is the speaker people mean when they say MartinLogan.

Motion series

Conventional speakers built around MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter. A strong choice for rooms that also serve as a TV room, or where the speakers need to sit closer to the wall.

Subwoofers

Built to keep up with the speed of an electrostatic panel, so the bass blends instead of lagging behind. Placement and tuning here are as important as the sub itself.

In wall and in ceiling

Architectural speakers for rooms where nothing can sit on the floor, and for the rest of the house once the listening room is done.

Is MartinLogan Right for You?

We would rather tell you now than after you have bought them.

A great fit if

  • You sit down and actually listen, at least some of the time
  • The speakers can come out from the wall behind them
  • You love voices, acoustic instruments and the space around them
  • You want a big sound without a big wooden box in the room

Maybe something else if

  • The speakers have to sit flat against a wall or inside a cabinet
  • The room is mostly for movies and the music is in the background
  • You want the most bass from the smallest possible speaker
  • Then we will point you to the Motion series, in wall speakers, or another approach that suits the room

Yes. The electrostatic panel needs wall power to keep its diaphragm charged, so each speaker needs an outlet nearby. We plan for it during the design.
Farther than most box speakers, because they send sound backward as well as forward. The exact distance depends on your room, and we set it by measurement and by ear with you in the listening seat.
They need an amplifier that is comfortable driving them, and not every amplifier is. Matching the amplifier to the speakers is part of the design we do.
Yes. They can anchor the front of a home theater as well as a music system. If movies are the priority, we will talk through whether the electrostatic hybrids or the Motion series suit the room better.
Yes. We can place and tune a pair you already own, and help you match it to the right amplifier.
