Signs Critters Might Be Eating Your Stereo & AV Equipment

August 11, 2022

Electronics sometimes stop working; that is a given. Sometimes it is the device or product itself–nothing lasts forever.

Other times, it may be something else, critters! No, not alligators, although they would wreak havoc on electronics or wiring. I'm talking about rodents–mice, squirrels, and rats.

We occasionally have to troubleshoot electronics that result from rodents chewing the wiring. Rodent interference usually occurs in your attic, where they are looking for an easy meal. This can be greatly reduced by sealing any access points, adding rodent preventative measures in the attic, or maybe calling a pest control company.

The rodents will sometimes just gnaw a little of the protective insulation from a speaker wire. Other times they have destroyed the entire copper conductor or electrical wire!

Some signs of wiring issues are degraded signals, intermittent outages, flickering, tripping breakers, humming noises, warm spots, and even a burning plastic smell.

If you have any of these problems, call an AV specialist immediately at 727-804-2277. Not only is your equipment not operating correctly, but there could be a safety issue.
