Hidden Home Theaters - Transform Any Room, Any Time
I want to show you a couple of unique projects we've done. In the hidden home theater project (see video below), a client who lives on Beach Drive in St Petersburg. The client wanted to have a great, large theater, but they wanted something discrete, so it didn't destroy their view of the St Pete Pier.
The Home Theater Room Design
I suggested installing a motorized screen and hidden speakers in the soffit above their large wall of windows. It was ambitious but turned out extremely well. The screen fit into the lower part of the soffit, then we installed left, center, and right stealth acoustics speakers in the front and sides to give the client a full 5.1 surround. There is a subwoofer and all the electronics enclosed in the sofa cabinet, and we put the projector on the cabinet and later had a designer build a little enclosure to hide it.
The massive screen when fully retracted is completely hidden and does not obscure the view. The electronics are tucked away pretty much invisible. This was a great solution for this client. In the video above you can see the scale of the screen.
The Home Theater Room Design Take 2
Nine months later, the same client called to let me know they bought another condo and wanted another discrete theater in his new condo.
The new condo had its own challenges. The wall the client wanted the screen was a two-story stone wall made of cement block with stone over the face There was nowhere to run wires, so we had to come up with a solution.
Part of the room had wood trim in it. I suggested we continue that trim all the way across the stone and around the room (see video), so it had good flow. The front could be built out far enough to have a movie screen fit inside.
A trim carpenter built the enclosure we designed. There was room for a front left, center, and right monitor audio radius speakers and the movie screen projects from the bottom. With the screen’s trap door so the screen is invisible when it isn’t in use. The surround speakers are in the rear ceiling. The projectors is located in the rear soffit. Our client is excited about his new theater!
